NWU APS Requirements: How North-West University Scores You

NWU adds your best 6 subjects (Life Orientation excluded) on a 1-8 scale for a maximum of 48. NWU's own APS calculator scores 90-100% as 8 points, so an NWU score is not comparable with a 42-point APS. In practice that means NWU uses a 1-8 points scale, so your NWU number depends on NWU's specific rules rather than a single national formula.

The important thing to understand is that NWU uses a 1-8 scale out of 48, where 90% and above earns 8 points. Two applicants with identical matric marks can end up with different admission numbers at different universities purely because the counting rules differ. NWU converts each subject percentage into a level on the table below, from 8 points for 90 to 100% down to the lowest band. You then take your best six subjects, leave out Life Orientation, and add the levels for a total out of 48. There are no bonus points and no subject is weighted more heavily than another, which makes the NWU calculation one of the more predictable ones to plan around.

Because only your best six count, a weak seventh subject does not drag your NWU score down. It also means that once a subject is in a band, extra marks inside that band do not add points: pushing a 71% to 78% changes nothing on the NWU scale, but crossing from 79% to 80% does. Knowing where the band edges fall is the single most useful thing for planning a realistic NWU target.

A 34 out of 48 is not the same standing as a 34 out of 42, so never carry the number across.

The most common mistake is counting Life Orientation. NWU excludes it, but plenty of generic calculators add it in, which inflates your total by several points and can make a programme look reachable when it is not.
