University Applications 2027: Dates and Deadlines

You apply a full year before you study. The 2027 cycle runs through 2026: most universities open applications around March or April, the general windows close between June and September, and offers are made provisionally on your Grade 11 or Grade 12 mid-year marks long before anyone has seen a matric result. Final National Senior Certificate results are released in January 2027, at which point provisional offers are confirmed or withdrawn and the late and clearing routes open for whoever is left.

The practical consequence is that the decisions that matter happen while you are still in school. By the time you know your final marks, most places have already been allocated. That is why an early, honest estimate of your score is worth so much more than a precise one calculated too late, and why applying to several universities rather than one is standard advice in South Africa.

There is no national closing date. Each university sets its own calendar, so among the dates verified here UP closes its general window on 30 June 2026 while Wits, DUT and NMU close on 30 September 2026 - a three-month spread for the same intake. TUT closes at the end of July. A date you half-remember from a friend applying elsewhere is not a safe guide to your own deadline.

Layered on top of that, individual programmes close earlier than their university's general window. Health sciences, veterinary science and other selection programmes commonly close on 30 June, and some universities also stop accepting applications for a programme the moment it fills, whatever the published date says. Always confirm the date for the specific programme you want, at the specific university you want it from.

While applications are open, calculate your score for each university on your list using its own method, check the subject requirements for your target programmes, and apply as early as you can. Subject requirements are a hard gate that no score compensates for: a degree that requires Mathematics will not accept Mathematical Literacy no matter how high the mark. If a programme needs the NBTs, an audition or a portfolio, book it immediately, because those slots run out before the application deadline does.

After you have applied, keep your contact details current and watch for conditional offers, then confirm your acceptance promptly when results arrive in January. If you fall short, the options are real but narrower: late applications where a university still runs them, the national CACH clearing service, extended or foundation programmes with lower entry bars, a higher certificate as a bridge into a degree, or an upgrade and a stronger application next cycle.
