UJ APS Requirements 2026: How UJ Calculates Your Score

UJ uses the standard Admission Point Score: your best 6 subjects (Life Orientation excluded) summed on the DBE 1-7 scale, maximum 42. Some programmes add Life Orientation on a reduced basis - confirm per programme. In practice that means UJ uses the standard 1-7 Admission Point Score, so your UJ number depends on UJ's specific rules rather than a single national formula.

The important thing to understand is that UJ uses the standard 1-7 NSC scale and excludes Life Orientation entirely. Two applicants with identical matric marks can end up with different admission numbers at different universities purely because the counting rules differ. UJ converts each subject percentage into a level on the table below, from 7 points for 80 to 100% down to the lowest band. You then take your best six subjects, leave out Life Orientation, and add the levels for a total out of 42. There are no bonus points and no subject is weighted more heavily than another, which makes the UJ calculation one of the more predictable ones to plan around.

Because only your best six count, a weak seventh subject does not drag your UJ score down. It also means that once a subject is in a band, extra marks inside that band do not add points: pushing a 71% to 78% changes nothing on the UJ scale, but crossing from 79% to 80% does. Knowing where the band edges fall is the single most useful thing for planning a realistic UJ target.

The most common mistake is counting Life Orientation. UJ excludes it, but plenty of generic calculators add it in, which inflates your total by several points and can make a programme look reachable when it is not. The second mistake is mixing up percentages and levels: on a points scale you enter your actual subject percentage, and the calculator converts it, not the 1-7 level. The third is assuming the UJ number from one calculator transfers to another university. It does not, because UJ uses the standard 1-7 NSC scale and excludes Life Orientation entirely. Always calculate each university on its own terms.

The clearest way to see why the method matters is to run one matric result through all six universities. A number that looks strong on one scale can be middling on another, and a programme minimum only means something once it is expressed in the same units the university actually uses.
