As a rough guide on a points scale, clearing the low-to-mid range opens many degrees, while competitive programmes such as medicine, engineering, actuarial science and law expect scores near the top of the range. Whatever the number, it is only meaningful against UP's own requirements for the specific programme you want. A score that clears one faculty may fall short in another, and minimums move between cycles. A score below your target programme is not the end of the road. Options that South African applicants commonly use include an extended or foundation-year version of the degree with a lower entry bar, a related programme at UP that you can later transfer from, or the same field at another university whose method or minimum suits your marks better. You can also improve the inputs. If you are still in Grade 11 or 12, the band edges matter: on a points scale, nudging a subject across a band boundary is worth more than raising a mark that stays in the same band.
